The plate lunch—often called Hawaii's state food—originated in the 1800s with plantation workers from Japan, China, the Philippines, Portugal, Korea, and beyond, who shared meals on their lunch breaks, leading to plates with a little bit of everything. As Hawaii continued to become a cultural melting pot, its cuisine also reflects this diversity and love for sharing food.
